 Help??---- thyroid ultrasound...
« Thread Started on Nov 4, 2009, 10:35am »

hey everyone
just looking for opinions here - i know ya'll are not dr's but i trustyour judgement soooo...... went this am and had the ultra sound done on the lump on my thyroid . i have a 2.18 cm solid nodule on the left lobe. everything else on the thyroid is normal i assume since the dr. didnt mention anything else . he said these are 96% benign but i would really like to hear from you guys. this "thing" swells up and i feel like crap - then it shrinks down and i feel wonderful... anything you know about or have experienced? he doesnt seem overly concerned about this - he does want me to go get an uptake scan done to make sure it and the thyroid is "hot".without insurance im not too sure how much this will cost so that will determine when i can do it. the meds he had me on - tapazole and propanolol pushed me from hyper to hypo -when that happened he lowered my tapazole dosage and for the past 10 days i have felt wonderful - now he wants to further lower the tapazole and to be honest im not sure how i feel about this .. i figure if it aint broke why fix it? soooo ... if anyone here can give me some feedback on these things i would appreciate it :D
I hope your all feeling well today!!

Kerry, I myself have not had much experience with this. I do wonder why your Dr wants to change your meds once again, I would worry too.

I am sure others will come along soon.

Hugs, hang in there.

Kerry,

Sorry we have been a little busy here, and out of town. Sorry one of us did not get to you sooner, we will always try and answer posts as soon as we can.

Ya I dont like the idea that he made this decison without the labs. You should be tested every 6 weeks. Let me know how those labs come out.

Below are a few links that may be helpful to you.

Hugs! I hope you have a great weekend.

Hi LeeLee
thanks so much for the links - they were very helpful - and please do not even worry about the time taken to get back to me - the fact that you guys take time out of your day to help all of us here is wonderful....after reading the things that you sent me im a little confused as to why my dr. has ordered an uptake test BEFORE doing FNA?? if the uptake test cannot determine whether a nodule is cancerous or not then what the heck is the point?? especially as i dont have insurance and it seems that both articles were saying that the uptake is an expensive test to have done compared to FNA which is relatively inexpensive? grrrrr............ im sooo frustrated lol .....if ANYONE has any advice - id appreciate it ! thanks so much for your help !
i hope everyone feels good today!!

Kerry,

First of all, a single nodule of that size IS suspicious, and should be thoroughly investigated.

The uptake scan will show if it is "hot" yes, and if it is, then you will need to continue on ATD's until you decide which method will treat it--either radioiodine or surgery is usually done.

In either case, a FNA should still be done, just because the case for cancer is always a possibility for either hot or cold nodules, and this is the best way to determine the status of the nodule.

Hi Kerry

In addition to what Yabiz has posted - if the nodule is "hot" (absorbing iodine and producing thyroid hormones) it is a good candidate for a small dose of RAI. I know there are "issues" with RAI but it should be considered.

FNA results are not 100% informative BUT they give a very good idea of what cell structures are in there which increases the dr's ability to target treatment accurately.

If I had to choose one procedure or the other I'd base it on what you are likely to choose as a treatment option and therefore what will give you the best information for that treatment.

hi-
thanks so much for your replies ...... they really did help.. just got off the phone with the dr.'s nurse and she told me the reason that my dr. wants the uptake BEFORE the FNA is because he doesnt feel the biopsy is necessary at this point based on the ultra sound? soooooo... i went ahead and scheduled it for the 24th of this month... want to get it over with as soon as possible to maybe put my mind at ease somewhat. anyone else feel like they are swimming up stream with all of this? oh and before i forget - anyone else who is self- pay : when you need these procedures done? PLEASE call around to different hospitals to get the best price! i spent most of yesterday doing that and im going to end up paying about 1200.00 LESS because i did this! so woowoo me lol. and when you call for prices? let them know what you are doing - they WILL compete for your business! thanks so much ladies!
Hope you are feeling well today!!
